02/04/07: Initiation was a great success! We brought in 18 new members, which is a record for our chapter.
News from the national convention: national dues have been raised to $30. Congratulations to Mizzou graduate (and current grad student) David Collier won Eta Sigma Phi's scholarship to study in Rome for the summer. Also, Jes Geary was elected to serve as the national vice-president.
02/12/07: New web address! You can now access the Mizzou Eta Sigma Phi website at etasigmaphi.missouri.edu
For those of you who missed the first meeting of the semester, here are the things we announced:
*Initiation is this semester, 7.Mar at 7pm in AP Green Chapel. If you need to be initiated locally or nationally, you need to come to the initiation, obviously! There's an event on Facebook with more information (message any of the officers on Facebook for an invite), or feel free to ask any of the officers questions.
*The Cena Deorum is going to be further on in the semester. This is a dinner party where we all dress like gods/goddesses/etc. (though it's not required), eat a lot of food, have a trivia contest, and get to mingle with undergrads, grad students, and staff.
*The Relay for Life is coming up, which is a fundraiser for cancer research. If you'd like to participate, please contact Katie Langenfeld for details. Also, if you are participating on another team, don't feel bad. We're not competitive when it comes to charity, as long as everyone is joining in the fight!
*There is a translation contest coming up 19-23 of Feb. There are 6 catagories: Intermediate Latin, Advanced Latin, Latin Prose Composition, Intermediate Greek, Advanced Greek, and Koine Greek. If you are interested in participating in that, please send Jes a note back and she'll give you better details (or you can see her note on Facebook about it).
*Our fundraiser this semester is going to be 1" buttons, so we're looking for funny sayings and things to put on them. Message Jes with ideas, if you have any!
*Also, we are looking for new tee-shirt designs, so you can message any of the officers concerning an idea you have.
*Our guest lecturer this semester will be James Farris who has been teaching Latin at a high school level since the 60s. The purpose of this lecture is to educate people who are interested in teacing Classics at a pre-collegiate level, to perhaps inspire some of the undergrads to go into the field, to give new and exciting ideas to people already involved in such matters, and for fun! Who doesn't like lectures?!
*We're also open for ideas for things to do. A lot of members kept saying they wanted to do more social things, but we only have so many ideas, so we're taking ideas from those very members! So far it's been suggested we have a board-game night and perhaps have a sit down dinner or drinks. Any ideas can be sent to any officer!
*I think that pretty much covers it. If you are not already on the Eta Sigma Phi facebook group or yahoo group, please join either as it will keep you up to date on upcoming events. Both web-addresses can be found on the website.
